The Luminaries Young Professionals invite you to explore the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures (formerly the Oriental Institute). We will enjoy a guided tour and behind-the-scenes look at the museum's expansive collection and restoration efforts, along with private discussion in the Director's Room.
Since its founding in 1919, ISAC has been a leading research center for the study of ancient civilizations. With some 350,000 artifacts, excavated mainly by ISAC archaeologists, we will learn about the beginnings of our lives as humans together. Galleries are devoted to ancient Egypt, Nubia, Persia, Mesopotamia, Syria, Anatolia, and the Levant.
ISAC was designed by Mayers, Murray & Phillip and constructed in 1930, matching the surrounding Gothic style of the University of Chicago campus. The exterior and interior architectural details represent motifs from the ancient Middle East.
Our group will gather at Plein Air Cafe for a complimentary light brunch, followed by the museum tour at noon. Thank you to Luminaries committee member Brandon Womack and the ISAC for organizing this special event.
