Introduction to Figure Drawing with Don Yang

4 AIA CES Learning Units / Elective and 4 credits towards the Certificate in Classical Architecture (Elective)

In this figure drawing workshop, students are introduced to basic concepts and practice of figure drawing from live model. Through various drawing exercises and mediums, students will explore shape, proportion, rhythm and dynamics of human form. Emphasis will be on creating a convincing representation of human figure on paper

Learning Objectives: through instruction and exercises students will learn to, 1. draw convincing human figure by exploring the gesture and contour of human figure. 2. create the illusion of human form through the use of value. 3. use various mediums in expressing dynamics of human figure. 

Instructional methods: Workshop will begin with a short lecture on concepts and principles of figure drawing followed by instructor demonstration, group instruction and rounds of individual instructions while students are drawing from a model.

About the instructor

Born in Seoul, Korea, Don came to the United States in his late teens. After 7 years of service in the U.S. Army, he pursued his childhood dream of living as an artist by training at the American Academy of Art College in Chicago, where he earned a BFA with honors and later an MFA with emphasis on fine art and traditional illustration. Don has been teaching oil painting, drawing and artistic anatomy in and around Chicago for the past 25 years including at the Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Arts and the American Academy of Art College where he is currently serving as chairperson of Fine Art Department and Foundations Department. Don is also recognized as a Master Painter by PAPC (Plein Air Painters Chicago) for whom he frequently teaches outdoor painting workshop and conducts painting demonstration and critique sessions. Painting outdoors in the Chicago area as well as in his studio in the historic Fine Arts Building, he frequently exhibits his work and provides instructions for area art organizations.
