Is your building making you sick, fat, and stupid? Join us as Matthew McNicholas, AIA, discusses how Ornament - that which beautifies our built environment and adds grace to our buildings - plays a far more important role in our everyday experience than previously understood or acknowledged. Mr. McNicholas will demonstrate the science-based case for the use of Ornament in architecture, while covering some of its varied benefits for Humanity.

Matthew McNicholas, AIA, is a Principal with MGLM Architects in Chicago. Matthew regularly conceives and executes ornamental and decorative programs and designs for all building types, and has served extensively as a thematic, decorative, and ornamental consultant. A published and awarded artist and designer, he currently heads the Preservation Committee of the Auxiliary Board for Louis Sullivan's Auditorium Theatre. Matthew is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where he received his Bachelor’s of Architecture and Master’s of Architectural Design and Urbanism.

Decorators Supply Corporation specializes in the manufacture of artistic decorative accessories such as plaster and composition mouldings and ornamentation. The company traces its history back to 1883 and established their place in Chicago’s History when their cast ornamental plaster mouldings were used to adorn the buildings and halls showcased in the Columbian Exhibition of 1893. This third generation family run business is recognized as an unparalleled resource for both new and historic detailing of finely crafted architecture and interiors.

Join us for a private tour of the process behind creating these highly detailed mouldings and an opportunity to meet the artisans responsible for their creation. We will also be viewing the vault which holds original molds and samples from the Columbian Exhibition of 1893 and historic buildings of Chicago.
